🦜 Untamed Parrots
Untame parrot babies are born and raised by their mum and dad, not by humans. They stay in the nest and are not handled, so they don’t get used to people.
If you’re buying an untame parrot, yes – the price will be cheaper, sometimes even 50% less than a tame bird. But if you buy it at a young age, you can still tame it with time and care. The best thing about untame birds is that they are more affordable, great for people on a low budget. Just remember – if you're going untame, buy young.
🦜 Semi-Tame Parrots
A semi-tame parrot is also raised by its mum and dad, but the breeder will sometimes take the babies out of the nest, handle them for a bit, and then put them back. Once the bird is fully weaned, the breeder spends a few more days handling it before it’s sold.
I would say semi-tame parrots are the best option. At ParrotsForSale.co.uk, we try to offer mostly semi-tame birds. They’re not fully tame, but they’ve been around humans and can be tamed easily with some time. Plus, they’re still cheaper than hand-reared parrots and only a little more than untamed ones. This makes them a great choice if you're on a budget, but still want a friendly bird.
🦜 Hand-Reared Parrots
Everyone knows hand-reared parrots are raised by humans from day one. They are fed with a spoon or syringe, and they never see their mum and dad – they think humans are their parents.
This is why hand-reared parrots are usually the most tame and friendly. But they are also much more expensive. A hand-reared baby parrot will eat around 1kg of hand-rearing formula, which costs over £70 just for the food. On top of that, the breeder has to feed the bird five times a day for the first 4 weeks, including early mornings and even late at night. It’s a lot of work.
That’s why hand-reared parrots can cost 2 to 3 times more than untamed ones. But if you can afford it, it’s the easiest way to start with parrots, especially for beginners.
Final Thought
In the end, all parrots – tame, semi-tame, or untamed – can become great pets. Once an untamed or semi-tame bird is fully trained, it can be just as friendly as a hand-reared one. It all depends on your budget, time, and patience.
